WREN - Wreningham ware
A transitional ware which has similarities to Ipswich and Thetford-type wares. "Moderate to abundant fine to medium sub-angular to rounded clear and opaque (white) quartz sand (mostly up to 0.5mm, less frequently up to 1mm), occasional medium to coarse flint (mostly up to 8mm, but occasionally over 10mm), black-iron ore and rare red iron ore, iron-stained quartz and calcareous inclusions" (Sudds 2016). NB also sparse mica visible on surfaces.
TS description (H. Page): Moderately poorly sorted, rounded, coarse to very fine sand sized quartz and polycrystalline quartz. Rare small equant chert, plagioclase feldspar, biotite mica, and very rare microcline feldspar. Non-calcareous, mid-brown, oxidised clay matrix with weak optical activity. Dark brown clay streaks and sharp to merging, dark brown-red iron rich textual features with high optical density and a red clay pisolith. Meso- planar voids and channels, and shrinkage void around dehydrated argillaceous clay inclusions. No calcareous inclusions were observed as stated in the macroscopic fabric description.
