EMW - Early medieval ware
Fine/medium sandy thin-walled handmade wares. Coarser quartz present in some, but generally not visible on surface. Occasional mica, calcareous, ferrous, organic and flint/chert inclusions may also be present.
TS description (H. Page): Relatively well sorted, sub-rounded to sub-angular, coarse to medium sand sized quartz, polycrystalline and rare microcrystalline quartz. Few small equant chert inclusions, rare plagioclase feldspar and weathered unidentifiable feldspar, elongate biotite mica, and very rare unidentifiable inclusion with colourful interference cf. clinopyroxene. Relatively homogeneous, red-brown to dark red-brown, non-calcareous matrix. Strongly optically active at the section edges and weak optical activity in the centre. Frequent mega- elongate channels parallel to the section wall.
