THETK - Kirstead Thetford-type ware
Moderately coarse fabric in comparison with other Thetford-type wares, although in section it has a fine silty/sandy matrix with moderate fine-medium sand, moderate ferrous oxide and sparse coarse flint. More likely to be buff than grey, but this is based on the kiln assemblage, which does also contain hard, well-fired greywares.
TS description (H. Page): Poorly sorted, equant, rounded to sub-rounded, very coarse to fine sand sized quartz inclusions and very rare polycrystalline quartz. Rare elongate biotite mica, microcline feldspar, ferruginous opaque minerals, and two elongate sub-angular very coarse sized chert and micritic calcite inclusions. Non-calcareous, non-optically active, reduced dark grey-black clay matrix with some concordant textual features with a high optical density and sharp to diffuse boundaries. Common elongate meso- to micro planar voids and channels. Chert inclusions likely to be flint temper.
