GRCWL - Late medieval Grimston coarseware
Denser and with less well-sorted sand than GRCW. Buff or black surfaces, occasionally red (may be wasters). Some sherds contain mica - not seen in GRCW.
TS description (H. Page): Well sorted, common generally equant, rounded to sub-rounded, very coarse to fine quartz and rare microcrystalline quartz. Very fine few biotite mica inclusions and ferruginous opaque minerals, and rare microcline and weathered feldspar. Non-calcareous, yelloworange-brown to dark red-brown, homogeneous highly optically active and oxidised matrix. Common discordant, deep red, iron-rich textual features with high optical density. Common macro- and fewer meso-vugh and channels. Possibly sand tempered.
