FRANCW - Fransham (early) medieval coarseware
Common to abundant fine/medium sand (mainly cream-coloured, some grey, white, sub-rounded, up to 0.4mm), sparse rounded coarse quartz (brown, white), sparse v coarse flint (some sherds have none, others 2-3 pieces), sparse rounded ferrous oxide. Rims include simple everted types, but also more developed bowl rims (sim to UGBB). At least 2 handles in sample. Probably a sub-set of EMWSF.
TS description (H. Page): Poorly sorted, sub-rounded to sub-angular, coarse to fine sand sized quartz and polycrystalline quartz. Sparse muscovite mica and small sub-angular chert, rare plagioclase feldspar, ferruginous minerals and one large elongate, sub-angular iron-stained chert inclusion. Homogenous non-calcareous red matrix with a high iron content. The external edge of the section is dark red-grey in colour. Frequent iron-rich discordant, argillaceous clay inclusions with a high optical density. Frequent mega- and meso- vughs and channel voids. The large iron stained sub-angular chert inclusion is a possible indication of flint tempering.
